Sustainable Fish and Chips in Somerset, Why We Are Moving Away From Cod

Updated: 2 days ago

Why Our Fish & Chip Menu Has Changed.

At White Row Farm, we take great pride in the quality of the fish we serve and the standards behind it. Over recent months, cod has become more difficult to source consistently at the standards and price we expect. Quotas are in place for good reason, and we fully support responsible fishing limits that protect fish stocks for the future.

Cod has been a British favourite for generations, but today it faces a very different reality. We have made the decision to update our fish offering in response to the realities of the market and our commitment to sustainability. Cod prices have risen continuously, quotas have tightened, and supply has become more unpredictable, making it increasingly difficult to offer cod as a regular menu item without compromising on value or responsible sourcing.

We introduced hake last year as a sustainable, more affordable fish option for our customers. This change has been carefully considered over time. As the UK’s favourite chippy fish, cod will always have a place in the conversation, but it is no longer cost-effective for us to offer cod as our only regular white fish.

For that reason, we will now be serving hoki alongside hake and haddock as our daily offerings. These changes will allow us to keep our menu responsibly sourced, affordable, and enjoyable for our customers.

About Our Fish:

Hoki

Delicate, white, mild and succulent meat. High in Omega 3, low in fat, high in protein, Vitamin B12 and D.

Haddock

Highly nutritious, low-fat white fish. Rich in vitamin B12, selenium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium. Medium flakes with a savoury, more pronounced fishy flavour.

Hake

Hake is a delicate, premium white fish with a soft, silky texture and a mild, elegant flavour. It is a lovely option for customers who enjoy something refined and a little lighter on the palate.

Whether you choose hoki, haddock, or hake, you can expect careful preparation, excellent flavour, and our homemade tartare sauce with every fish dish.
